Troubleshooting
Camera or Barcode Scanner Not Working
Troubleshoot issues with the in-app camera and barcode scanning features.
If you're having trouble with the in-app camera or barcode scanner, follow these steps to resolve the issue.
Step 1: Check Camera Permissions
The app needs permission to use your device's camera.
How to check:
Step 1: Open the Settings app on your iPhone
Step 2: Scroll down and tap on "Sunu"
Step 3: Look for "Camera" in the list of permissions
Step 4: Ensure the toggle is turned ON
If it was off:
- Turn it on
- Return to Sunu
- Try using the camera again
Step 2: Ensure a Clear View
For Barcode Scanning
Optimal conditions:
- Entire barcode visible in camera frame
- Good lighting on the barcode
- No shadows across the code
- No glare or reflections
- Barcode is flat and undamaged
Technique:
- Hold phone steady for 2-3 seconds
- Keep barcode centered
- Distance: 4-8 inches from barcode
- Perpendicular angle (straight on)
- Wait for recognition beep or vibration
Common issues:
- Too close or too far
- Barcode wrinkled or damaged
- Poor lighting conditions
- Moving phone too much
- Wrong type of barcode
For Taking Photos
Best practices:
- Subject is well-lit
- Camera lens is clean
- Subject is in focus
- Stable hand or phone position
- Good contrast between subject and background
For food photos:
- Natural or bright lighting
- Full plate visible
- Clear view of all items
- Avoid extreme shadows
- Close enough to see details
Step 3: Restart the App
If permissions are correct and the view is clear, completely closing and reopening the app can often resolve temporary glitches.
How to restart:
Step 1: Swipe up from the bottom of your screen (or double-press the Home button on older iPhones)
Step 2: This opens the app switcher
Step 3: Find the Sunu app card
Step 4: Swipe it up to close it completely
Step 5: Return to your Home Screen
Step 6: Tap the Sunu app icon to relaunch
Barcode-Specific Troubleshooting
Different Barcode Types
Supported barcodes:
- GS1 DataMatrix (medication barcodes)
- UPC/EAN (food product barcodes)
- QR codes (certain features)
Not all barcodes work:
- Some barcodes aren't in our database
- Custom or proprietary codes may not scan
- Damaged barcodes can't be read
Medication Barcode Issues
For GS1 DataMatrix codes:
- Square, pixelated appearance
- Usually on prescription boxes
- Contains lot number and expiration
- More sensitive to lighting
If not scanning:
- Ensure it's a DataMatrix code, not regular barcode
- Try different angle
- Improve lighting
- Smooth out any wrinkles
- Try a different unit of the same medication
Food Barcode Issues
For UPC/EAN codes:
- Traditional striped barcodes
- On most packaged foods
- Should scan relatively easily
If not scanning:
- Clean the barcode area
- Better lighting
- Hold steady longer
- Try from different angle
- Manual entry as fallback
Camera Quality Issues
Blurry or Unfocused Images
Causes:
- Dirty camera lens
- Autofocus not working
- Too close to subject
- Low light conditions
- Camera hardware issue
Solutions:
Clean the lens:
- Use soft, lint-free cloth
- Gently wipe camera lens
- Remove fingerprints and smudges
Improve focus:
- Tap on subject to focus
- Move slightly closer or farther
- Ensure adequate lighting
- Hold phone steady
Poor Lighting
Issues caused:
- Can't see barcode clearly
- Photos too dark
- Scanner can't read code
- Autofocus struggles
Solutions:
- Move to brighter area
- Use natural light if possible
- Turn on room lights
- Avoid backlighting
- Use phone flashlight if needed

- Check Sunu's permissions
- Try reinstalling Sunu
If camera doesn't work anywhere:
- Hardware or iOS issue
- Not Sunu-specific
- Contact Apple Support
Reporting Persistent Issues
If Nothing Works
Before contacting support, note:
- iPhone model and iOS version
- Steps you've already tried
- When the issue started
- Whether camera works in other apps
- Any error messages
Contact support with:
- Detailed description
- Screenshots if possible
- Screen recording of the issue

🔦 Lighting Tip
Most barcode and photo issues are related to lighting. If having trouble, move to a well-lit area or point phone toward a light source (but avoid direct glare on barcodes). Natural daylight works best for food photos.
📷 Permission Check
The #1 cause of camera issues is permissions. Always double-check Settings > Sunu > Camera is enabled. This simple step resolves 80% of camera problems.
