Understanding the AI Meal Analysis

Learn how AI identifies food, estimates nutrition, and suggests meal names from photos.

When you add a food item by taking a photo, Sunu's AI gets to work to make logging easier and more informative.

What the AI Does

Identifies Food

The AI analyzes the image to recognize what the food is. It uses this to pre-fill the item's name.

Estimates Nutrition

Based on the identified food, the AI provides an estimate of key nutritional information, including:

  • Calories — Total energy content
  • Protein — Essential for muscle and tissue repair
  • Carbohydrates — Your body's primary energy source
  • Fat — Important for hormone production and nutrient absorption

Suggests a Meal Name

If you add multiple items, the AI will suggest a descriptive name for the entire meal (e.g., "Chicken Salad with Avocado").

How Accurate Is It?

The AI nutritional analysis uses advanced image recognition and a comprehensive food database to provide estimates. However, accuracy can vary based on:

  • Image quality — Clear, well-lit photos produce better results
  • Food complexity — Simple dishes are easier to analyze than complex mixed meals
  • Portion sizes — The AI estimates standard portions, which may differ from your actual serving

Improving Accuracy

Take Better Photos

  • Capture the entire plate or dish
  • Use good lighting
  • Include common reference objects for scale
  • Photograph ingredients separately for mixed dishes

Manual Adjustments

You can always tap on an item to manually edit its details and nutritional information for more precision.

āš ļø Important

AI nutritional analysis is an estimate and may not be 100% accurate. For medical nutrition planning or strict dietary requirements, consult with a registered dietitian and verify all nutritional information.
