Understanding Your Trend Charts
Learn how to read and interpret interactive health trend charts to visualize your progress over time.
Tapping on any individual health reading in your history timeline will take you to a detailed view with an interactive trend chart. This chart helps you visualize your progress over time.
Accessing Trend Charts
Step 1: Navigate to the History tab and select the Health sub-tab
Step 2: Tap on any health reading from the timeline list
Step 3: The detail view opens with the trend chart displayed prominently
Understanding the Chart Components
The Axes
Vertical Axis (Y-Axis):
- Shows the value of the measurement
- Unit of measurement displayed (e.g., bpm, mmHg, steps)
- Scale automatically adjusts to your data range
Horizontal Axis (X-Axis):
- Shows the date and time
- Format changes based on time window selected
- May show hours, days, weeks, or months
The Data Points
Individual readings:
- Each dot represents one measurement
- Connected by lines to show trends
- Tap any point to see exact value and time
Line graph:
- Smooth line connects data points
- Shows overall trend direction
- Makes patterns easier to identify
Color coding:
- May use different colors for different ranges
- Green often indicates healthy range
- Yellow or red may indicate values outside normal range
Changing the Time Window
Above the chart, you'll see a segmented control that lets you switch the time range. Tapping these options will update the chart to show your data over that period.
Available Time Windows
Day View:
- Shows last 24 hours
- Hourly breakdown
- Great for seeing daily patterns
- Best for frequently measured metrics (heart rate, steps)
Week View:
- Shows last 7 days
- Daily data points
- Ideal for short-term trends
- Good for tracking weekly goals
Month View:
- Shows last 30 days
- Daily or aggregated data
- Perfect for monthly patterns
- Helps identify mid-term changes
Year View:
- Shows last 12 months
- Weekly or monthly aggregation
- Best for long-term trends
- Reveals seasonal patterns
Reading the Chart
Identifying Trends
Upward trend:
- Line slopes upward from left to right
- Indicates increasing values over time
- May be positive (fitness improvements) or concerning (blood pressure rise)
Downward trend:
- Line slopes downward from left to right
- Indicates decreasing values over time
- May be positive (weight loss goal) or concerning (declining activity)
Stable trend:
- Relatively flat line
- Values remain consistent
- Indicates good maintenance or no change
Cyclical pattern:
- Regular ups and downs
- May indicate weekly or seasonal patterns
- Normal for many metrics (weight, energy, stress)
Data Aggregation
The app automatically aggregates your data for longer time windows to make the chart easier to read.
Why aggregation is used:
- Makes large datasets manageable
- Reduces visual clutter
- Shows overall patterns more clearly
- Improves chart readability
How data is aggregated:
Day view: Every individual reading shown
Week view: Hourly or daily averages
Month view: Daily averages or totals
Year view: Weekly or monthly averages
AI Trend Analysis
Below the chart, the AI provides a brief written summary of the trend, letting you know if the metric has been generally increasing, decreasing, or stable.
What the AI Tells You
Trend direction:
- "Your heart rate has been stable"
- "Your steps are increasing"
- "Your weight shows a downward trend"
Statistical insights:
- Average value for the period
- Highest and lowest readings
- Percent change from previous period
Context and interpretation:
- Whether trend is positive or concerning
- Comparison to healthy ranges
- Suggestions for improvement or maintenance

Comparing Multiple Metrics
Side-by-Side Analysis
While individual charts show one metric, you can:
Compare by switching:
- View one chart, then switch to another metric
- Mental comparison of patterns
- Look for correlations
Ask AI to compare:
- "Compare my sleep and energy levels"
- "Is there a correlation between steps and heart rate?"
- AI can analyze multiple metrics together
Understanding Gaps in Data
Missing Data Points
Why gaps occur:
- Metric wasn't measured during that time
- Device wasn't worn
- Data didn't sync from Apple Health
- Manual entries weren't logged
How gaps appear:
- Break in the line
- No data points shown
- May show "No data" label
What to do:
- Don't worry about occasional gaps
- Consistent gaps indicate tracking issue
- Check Apple Health permissions
- Verify device connectivity
Chart Best Practices
For Accurate Interpretation
Consider context:
- External factors affecting readings
- Changes in routine or lifestyle
- Illness or medication changes
- Device or measurement changes
Look for patterns, not single points:
- One high reading doesn't mean a trend
- Focus on overall direction
- Consider data quality and completeness
Use appropriate time windows:
- Short-term changes: Day or Week view
- Progress tracking: Month view
- Long-term patterns: Year view
Specific Metric Tips
Heart Rate Charts
- Look for resting vs. active patterns
- Check for unusual spikes
- Monitor recovery trends
- Compare to typical ranges
Sleep Charts
- Identify sleep debt patterns
- Track consistency
- Note weekend vs. weekday differences
- Monitor quality metrics
Activity Charts
- Check for weekly patterns
- Identify rest days
- Track goal adherence
- Monitor intensity trends
Weight Charts
- Use longer time windows (month/year)
- Don't stress daily fluctuations
- Look for overall trend direction
- Consider weekly averages
Sharing Charts
Export Options
Share with healthcare providers:
- Screenshot the chart
- Export as PDF with data
- Include AI analysis summary
Personal tracking:
- Save to photos for journal
- Share with accountability partner
- Post progress to social media (optional)
Troubleshooting Charts
"No Data Available"
- Check time window selection
- Verify data exists in Apple Health
- Ensure proper sync permissions
- Try different time period
Chart Not Updating
- Pull to refresh on History tab
- Check Apple Health sync status
- Restart the app
- Verify background refresh is enabled
Unexpected Patterns
- Verify data accuracy in Apple Health
- Check for device changes
- Look for duplicate entries
- Consider external factors (time zones, DST)
📊 Interpretation Tip
When viewing trend charts, always consider the full context. A rising heart rate trend might be concerning at rest, but could indicate improving fitness during exercise. Use the AI analysis and your own judgment to interpret what the data means for you.
💡 Pro Tip
Take screenshots of your charts before and after making health changes (new exercise routine, diet change, medication adjustment). This visual comparison makes it easy to see if your interventions are working.
